On Friday, February 11, at 10 a.m., the City will remember the positive impacts that the Rodgers Seniors’ Center has had on our senior community and celebrate the groundbreaking of the City’s newest public park.
The Center served as an army barracks for the Santa Ana Air Force Base in 1948-1949, and was dedicated as the City’s recreation center in 1949. It was later repurposed in 1975 as a senior recreation center. The Center was rededicated on April 27, 1984 and named for Michael E. Rodgers for his outstanding humanitarian efforts for the older adult community and a founder of the Huntington Beach Council on Aging (HBCOA).
On July 20, 2020, the City Council approved a plan to redevelop the site. A contract for construction was awarded on December 21, 2021 for the City to redevelop the Center into a new public park. The new park will include open green space, walking paths, a renovated clubhouse for community use, and added picnic and seating areas. Construction will begin this month, with an estimated completion of March 2023.
