Composting provides an easy way to enrich soil, helping it retain moisture and suppress plant diseases and pests. It is also an excellent and environmentally responsible way to dispose of food scraps and other compostable materials. Another form of composting is done with worms, called vermicomposting.

Huntington Beach residents can register for composting education workshops available for a $10 fee on select dates throughout the year at Shipley Nature Center. Due to the hands-on nature of this workshop, space is limited, so you are encouraged to sign up now. The following dates are still available at the time of publication:

September 17, 2022

October 15, 2022

For Huntington Beach residents who do attend the workshop, a voucher will be distributed for a $75 discount towards the purchase of a composting bin or vermicomposting kit.

The City of Huntington Beach plans to create a video version of the workshop in the coming weeks for anyone unable to attend or register. That video will be available on the City’s YouTube Channel once it is available.
