The Huntington Beach Art Center announces the summer exhibition, CHILDHOOD CLASSICS: 100 YEARS OF CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATION from the Art Kandy Collection, on view July 9 – August 20, 2022.
The exhibition and associated free public events are made possible by generous sponsorship from community leader Janet Johnson, The Huntington Beach Art Center Foundation, and Friends of the Huntington Beach Public Library (FOTL). With over 140 original works included from over 75 books, CHILDHOOD CLASSICS is presented in partnership with the Huntington Beach Public Library.
The exhibition is one of the most extensive presentations on the subject of children’s book illustration ever organized. The show explores the history of children’s books from the turn of the century pen and ink Mother Goose art of Sarah Noble Ives, to the most popular works of today, including the digital creations of Mo Willems.
CHILDHOOD CLASSICS was curated from the collection of Lois Sarkisian and Lee Cohen, the co-founders of Every Picture Tells A Story – the innovative and influential gallery the couple owned and operated in Los Angeles for over a quarter century. The exhibition was organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions in
association with Art Kandy.
Special events include children’s film screenings, guest lectures, and community workshops in illustration, bookmaking, journaling and more. Events are hosted onsite at the Art Center as well as the Main Street and Central Libraries. Visit the exhibition webpage for a complete list of events and activities. Operated in private/public partnership with The City of Huntington Beach, The Huntington Beach Art Center is located at 538 Main Street, Huntington Beach, California 92648.
