Every February we honor the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation. This year’s theme, “Black Resistance,” recognized African Americans’ resistance to historic oppression in pursuit of self-determination and equality. From activists and civil rights pioneers such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks – to leaders in industry, politics, science, and culture, such as Marie Maynard Daly, Katherine Johnson, and Maya Angelou – all aspects of our life have been touched by positive black influences.
Honoring the history and traditions of our African American community is not just something we should do in February, but everyday. We are grateful for their many accomplishments and achievements that have not only shaped our nation, but our world.
