The City of Huntington Beach conducts weed abatement efforts per Huntington Beach Municipal Code (HBMC) 8.16 for vacant parcels within the City annually.  Property owners are required to keep their vacant parcels free from weeds to reduce dry vegetation from growing that can become a fire hazard in dry climate or a place for coyotes to live.

Every April, weeds on vacant parcels are declared a nuisance per HBMC 8.16.020, and each parcel is posted with a notice of removal which is also sent to the offsite legal parcel owner. A public hearing regarding these notices is scheduled to take place during the May 2nd City Council meeting.   The City removes weeds from vacant parcels in early June if the owners cannot conduct such removal on their own.  Costs associated with the City’s efforts to remove weeds are recorded with the County as a special assessment every August per HBMC 8.16.080 and property owners are required to pay assessed fees.

To report a nuisance of weeds at a vacant parcel, please visit the report an issue webpage and select code enforcement violation. Or you may report through the MyHB app, which can be downloaded through your mobile app store on your cell phone or other mobile device.
