Active transportation, such as biking and walking, is growing in popularity in Huntington Beach as more people live, work and shop locally.  As residents gravitate to these new alternative mobility alternatives, the City has put new projects and policies in place to support these options to make Huntington Beach more bicycle and pedestrian friendly.

The City is leveraging grant authorization from Caltrans to create a bicycle connection on Utica Avenue from Beach Blvd. to Main Street, which includes a “pass thru” between Alabama and Lake and a new traffic signal at Lake and Utica.

Delaware Street is an extra wide street so the City will be able to provide buffered bike lanes in each direction while keeping the on-street parking as it is today.  The City will also re-stripe the bike lanes on Goldenwest Street to provide more protection for cyclists.

The city is also working on a “Shipley to Shore” pedestrian pathway along Seapoint Street along the southern edge of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve.  This will enhance the existing pedestrian pathway that starts at Edwards and Ellis to it takes hikers right down to PCH.  Additionally, the beach path from Blufftop Park is also being improved so that there are separated and wider portions for bikes and pedestrians and the rail will be replaced.

In addition to these active transportation alternatives, the City also has a “micro-transit” service designed to provide short hop trips in the downtown visitor area.  This popular mini-shuttle service reduces the number of vehicles in our most highly congested areas – particularly during the heavy tourist season in the summer.

In 2022, leave the car in the garage and jump on your bike or take a stroll to drink in the beauty of Surf City!
