The Huntington Beach Police Department (HBPD) hosted several Bicycle Rodeos throughout the year to prevent accidents and injuries to bicyclists. These events offered the opportunity to educate parents and children about riding bikes safely in the community. Our goal was to empower cyclists with minimal skills and rules of the road to keep everyone safe.

A Bicycle Rodeo is a bicycle safety clinic featuring fun obstacle courses, bike safety inspections, and bike safety rules of the road.  Knowledgeable staff from the Jax Bicycle Center was there to instruct, train, and provide quick tune-ups.

Throughout the event, free helmets were distributed to those in need. Attendees participated in an obstacle course with simulated lanes, intersections, crosswalks, and stop signs. Here are some safety tips from the event:

  • Stop at Intersection Signals and Stop signs.
  • Stop, or slow before entering any roadway and use caution at blind intersections.
  • Ride with the flow of traffic, not against it.
  • Signal your turns through hand signals.
  • Ride predictably, with no swerving or curb jumping.
  • Stay off the sidewalks – adjusted for local laws, etc.
  • Most importantly – Pay attention and drive defensive!

We hope that you will bring your family out to the next Bicycle Rodeo. Stay tuned for more HBPD events through the department’s social media platforms.

A huge thank you for our partnership with Jax Bicycle Center. Funding for this program was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
