HBPD Responds to Gunfire in Sunset Beach Resulting in Shooting of an Armed Man

On Monday, December 27, 2021, the Huntington Beach Police Department (HBPD) was involved in an officer involved shooting resulting in the injury of an armed adult man from Norwalk who is suspected to have shot a bike rider in Sunset Beach.

At approximately 12:20 p.m., the HBPD responded to reports of a shooting in Sunset Beach near South Pacific and 7th Street. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the armed suspect near South Pacific and 3rd Street. The suspect was non-compliant to the multiple commands given and an officer involved shooting occurred. Various lifesaving measures were provided and the suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is currently in critical condition. No officers were injured. The gun the suspect had in his possession was recovered at the scene.

The male bike rider involved in the initial shooting incident was located on South Pacific, a few blocks north from where the suspect was apprehended. The victim sustained non-life threatening gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital where he is currently in stable condition. Currently, there is no indication of a preexisting relationship between the victim and suspect, but this remains as part of the ongoing investigation.

At this time, it is unclear as to whether the suspect involved in yesterday’s Sunset Beach shooting was a homeless individual. Initial information shows that the suspect has been recently staying at a family member’s residence in Norwalk, however the details and frequency of his residency at that location is still under investigation.

The investigation into this incident is still ongoing and detectives are working to gather information and determine what led to the initial shooting. No further information or details will be released this evening regarding this incident.

As is procedure with HBPD officer involved shootings, the HBPD has asked the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to lead the investigation. If you have information or may be able to assist the Orange County Sheriff’s Department with their investigation into this incident, please call Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855- TIP-OCCS.

The HBPD continues to conduct homeless outreach and enforcement not only in Sunset Beach, but citywide. In addition to calls for service, our officers have conducted over 580 self-initiated activities/contacts within Sunset Beach in 2021. Those contacts include offering of services, ongoing outreach to those experiencing homelessness, and enforcement of applicable laws. We remain committed to conducting enforcement in a manner that not only complies with the Federal and State nondiscriminatory guidelines, but is also consistent with our agency’s commitment to public safety in our community. The HBPD will continue to enforce curfew violations which do not allow for individuals to remain overnight in our parks and public spaces; we will continue to conduct outreach to the unhoused; and, we will continue to proactively patrol the Sunset Beach area in an attempt to identify and curb illegal activity.

Effective immediately, we will be conducting increased patrols in the Sunset Beach area and those in the area will see an amplified police presence.
