High Surf & High Tide Expected Dec. 28 – 31

On December 28th a large, mid to long period WNW swell will be reaching the coastline of Huntington Beach. The models are showing the biggest waves in the north portions of the city by Goldenwest Street/Seapoint Avenue. and into Bolsa Chica State Beach.

This four-day swell event is a combination of two swells. The first swell is peaking on the 28th and is expected to bring waves in the 10-15 foot range. This swell will hold 8-10 foot surf through Friday the 29th. The second swell arrives on Saturday, December 30th and is projected to be larger, in the 15-18 foot range on Saturday and 8-10 foot range on Sunday.

Flooding Potential: High surf and morning high tides pose a potential for coastal flooding. This could entail waves going over PCH in the Bolsa Chica wetland area and potential flooding along PCH and in Sunset Beach.

In anticipation of this incoming swell event, Marine Safety and Public Works are working together to prepare for the surf event.

  1. Lifeguard towers in select areas have been backed away from the coastline.
  2. The Sunset Beach berm is being reinforced Thursday morning.
  3. Marine Safety and Public Works will continue to evaluate throughout the swell event.
