Mandatory Food Waste Recycling Program Begins January 1, 2022

Did you know?  Approximately 40% of all food in America is wasted, entering our landfills and emitting carbon dioxide-producing methane.  This waste costs labor, resources, time, and money to process, and a four-person family on average can lose approximately $1,500 a year on wasted food.

In an effort to reduce waste and greenhouse gases, the California State Legislature passed a law (SB 1383) that requires all California cities to phase in food waste recycling programs from 2022 to 2025.  The goal is for all Californians to reduce organic waste disposal by 75% and recover 20% of edible foods by 2025.  Edible foods are items that can be diverted from waste and safely repurposed for human consumption.

Huntington Beach’s waste and recycling provider, Republic Services, is developing an all-new residential food waste organics recycling program to comply with this new state law, which is mandatory and will be phased in with the start of the new year.  Residents will eventually be required to separate food waste from trash for collection.  This will allow waste and recycling providers to recover waste products and reuse it for other purposes.  As those details are finalized, they will be shared with every household.  Till then, please visit CalRecycle’s website for more details about SB 1383 and how it will impact you.
