October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Think Pink! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month & each year the campaign aims to raise awareness of this complicated disease that affects 1 in 8 women & 1 in 833 men in the United States. Since 1985, individuals, businesses, & communities have come together every October to show their support for the many people affected by breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month can be a time to reflect, give back, or even celebrate. To recognize the month, Mayor Pro Tem Mike Posey presented a proclamation at the October 4 meeting to two women that have fought & continue to fight the fight – Councilmember Natalie Moser & City staff member Sokha Ny. Both courageously shared their stories of being diagnosed at an early age & encouraged others to be aware of noticing signs for early detection & treatment.

The Huntington Beach Fire Department (HBFD) & Huntington Beach Police Department (HBPD) are also taking steps to raise awareness! HBFD partnered with Memorial Care to temporarily outfit one of their engines in pink for the month of October. HBPD has also wrapped one of their vehicles in pink & officers will sport their pink patches all month long. HBPD will also be selling special edition HBPD pink patches to raise funds for breast cancer awareness. To purchase, email [email protected] or visit the HBPD’s front counter during business hours.

As we celebrate the incredible resilience of breast cancer survivors, we remember those lost to this disease. We ask for comfort & strength for those currently battling this disease. United by compassion, we remind our community – citizens, government agencies, the media, & interested organizations – to maintain their hope to find new treatments, medications, & a cure for this widespread disease. With the community’s support, we can increase awareness of breast cancer & promote early detection & treatment to protect the most vulnerable among us, especially those with a family history of cancer.
