You don’t need to watch out for sand crabs this summer, because they’ll be watching out for you!  The “Sand Crabs” are the most junior of the Junior Lifeguards at Huntington Beach.  To be a Sand Crab you must be between 7 and 8 years old, swim 50 yards in under one minute and 15 seconds, tread water for two minutes and swim underwater for five yards.  The purpose of the program is to acquaint the youth of the community with the experience of the beach and its hazards, while creating an environment that will teach them courtesy, respect, discipline, sound morals, and good sportsmanship.

The largest program is the Junior Lifeguard Program which has blossomed to more than 1,200 students per year.  It is a full seven-week course through the summer with qualified students divided into three groups based on their age.  Available to students between 9-17 years old, the requirements are an ability to swim 100 yards within one minute and fifteen seconds, tread water for five minutes, and swim underwater for at least ten yards without coming up for a breath.
