Since the start of 2022, City staff from Public Works, Community and Library Services, and the Police Department have been meeting regularly with the Sunset Beach community to identify opportunities for public safety and infrastructure improvements. Through one-on-one and community meetings, there have been several areas for improvement identified by residents and staff. As a result of these meetings, the following improvements have been implemented or are in progress:

  • Increased Huntington Beach Police Department Patrol: In partnership with BeWellOC, the Huntington Beach Police Department has increased patrols throughout the Sunset Beach area as a means to curb illegal behavior while also offering outreach to those in need of services.
  • Ongoing Homeless Education and Information: With the assistance of community and faith-based organizations, the City has coordinated opportunities for residents and businesses within the Sunset Beach area to meet and discuss homelessness in Huntington Beach and what they can do to aid in the City’s efforts.
  • Enhanced Linear Park Lighting: At the request of the Sunset Beach community, the Public Works Department has started the process of retrofitting existing lighting along Linear Park to increase light output and visibility.
  • Updated Park and Beach Signage: The City has ordered and will soon be installing updated signage throughout the park and at all beach entrances. This updated signage will outline prohibited behavior within these public spaces and enforceable violations.
  • Modified Street Sweeping Schedule: The Public Works Department is working with the City’s street sweeping operator to modify street sweeping scheduling in Sunset Beach to better accommodate residents in the area.
  • Added Public Trash Pickup: The Public Works Department has increased the frequency of public trash bin pickups and cleanups throughout the greenbelt.
  • Modified Restroom Hours: In an effort to deter individuals from frequenting the greenbelt past the posted curfew, restrooms along the greenbelt are being locked overnight.

The City of Huntington Beach is optimistic that these changes developed and made in partnership with residents will further enhance the quality of life within the area.
