Junior Citizens Academy

At the City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 4, students from the City’s first inaugural Junior Citizens Academy graduated from the program. Hand-selected by teachers and administrators, forty-one students from eight different middle schools participated in the six-month program.

Once a month, the students gathered at the Civic Center to meet with Council Members and City staff to learn about the various inner workings of the City. Additionally, the students received hands-on experience with event planning and toured an HBFD ambulance as well as the Be Well van.  We congratulate the students for their participation and look forward to continuing the Junior Citizens Academy program next fall.

Baker to Vegas Relay Race

On Saturday, April 1, HBPD Officers participated in the 37th annual Baker to Vegas Relay Race. The department competed in the 300 Division for 300 or fewer sworn officers; several staff members also participated as runners, alternates, and support staff. Overall, HBPD finished 2nd in the division and 38th out of 232 registered teams.  The Baker to Vegas Relay is the most positive event offered to law enforcement officers today, promoting camaraderie and physical fitness awareness for all law enforcement. The event, which started in 1985 with only 14 registered teams, is a 120-mile relay race from the City of Baker, California, to Las Vegas, Nevada, that has expanded over the years to include more than 230 teams. It is the largest law enforcement event of its kind in the world, with teams traveling from Calgary, Canada, Hamburg, Germany, and other international locations.
