2023 City Drinking Water Quality Report Now Available

Have you ever wondered what’s in your glass of water or where it comes from? Finding out is as transparent as water itself. The 2023 City of Huntington Beach Drinking Water Quality Report is now available on the City’s website. The City’s water system consistently meets or exceeds all State and Federal standards for drinking water. Regulations require water agencies to prepare an annual water quality report and distribute it by July 1.

Announcement postcards are being mailed to all residential and commercial water users throughout Huntington Beach. Hard copies are also available at public counters at City Hall, City Libraries, and the Senior Center in Central Park. For further information or to request a printed copy, please contact the Public Works Utilities Office at (714) 536-5921.

Street Maintenance – Bus Stop Reconstruction

Orange County Transportation Authority bus drivers alerted the Public Works Department’s Street Maintenance Division of asphalt and concrete failures at a popular bus stop on Warner Avenue near Beach Boulevard. Street Maintenance team members set up traffic control, made necessary repairs, and reopened Warner Avenue to traffic.

Street Maintenance – HAZMAT Response

On June 14, a resident contacted the Public Works Department’s Street Maintenance Division regarding an unknown white substance in the gutter at Gemfall Lane and Doremere Drive. Street Maintenance HAZMAT Response team members responded immediately, secured the area, pressure washed and cleaned the substance, collected the wastewater, and reopened the street.

Weed Abatement at Irby Park

The Public Works Department’s Landscape Maintenance Division coordinated weed abatement at Irby Park this week. Weed abatement reduces potential fire risks and improves park aesthetics. Nearby residents and Irby Park volunteers expressed gratitude for a job well done.

Marine Safety

We are nearing the beginning of summer which includes an increase in preventative actions (customer contacts) and beach enforcement. With over 300 preventative actions in the water, lifeguards contacted over 1,800 beachgoers last week. The water is warming up and people are spending more time on the beach. Please remember to swim near a lifeguard.

Summer’s long hours give rise to more people enjoying Huntington Beach with their families, dogs, bikes, and boards. Typical calls for enforcement include keeping dogs on leashes, reminding the public of the beach closing hours, riding at slower speeds on E-bikes, and staying off lifeguard towers. The beach and beach parking lots close at 10:00 p.m. Please let the fire in the pit burn out.

Junior Lifeguards

HB Lifeguards worked with Huntington Surf & Sport (HSS) to distribute the HB Junior Lifeguard uniforms. Parents were excited to get the new uniform at HSS and receive 25% off fins and 25% off one item for coming into the store. This is an example of a public and private partnership that helps both the City and the community. Huntington Beach Fire Department is looking forward to the Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguard Program starting on Monday, June 26.

Law Enforcement Torch Run

Each year, Huntington Beach Police Department Personnel participates in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run. This event is coordinated by the Special Olympics of Southern California and Law Enforcement agencies across Southern California. Volunteers from various law enforcement agencies participate in the event and carry the Olympic Torch through their communities to increase awareness about the organization and garner community support.

This year’s event took place on Friday, June 9. HBPD officers and volunteers were handed the torch from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, then carried it from Main and Yorktown to the Center Signal in Bolsa Chica where they handed it off to the Orange County Probation Department.

72nd Annual HB Pier Swim

On Saturday, June 10, the Community & Library Services Department hosted the 72nd Annual Pier Swim. Over 250 participants competed in the Pier Swim this year, with some coming from as far as Florida to race around the pier. The participants also set some amazing records this year! A negative tide and some fast swimming led to 13 record breaking swims, including a new record for the overall fastest time of 7 minutes 35 seconds, which was set by Aidan Arie of Nova Aquatics.

Additionally, Nova Aquatics took home the Gene Belshe Memorial Perpetual Trophy, ending a 5-year win streak by Swim Long Beach. A special thanks to Marine Safety and the beach lifeguards that ensured all participants’ safety during the race.
