Marine Safety & Junior Lifeguard Program

Last week the Marine Safety Division had over 130 calls for service, with 28 aquatic rescues. The harbor has remained busy since the kickoff of boat season. There were four boat calls and plenty of preventative actions at the harbor beaches.

The Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguard Program finished the last tryout for summer. The program has over 1,200 children registered for summer programs, which include the flagship Junior Lifeguards, Sand Crabs, and Beach Rangers.

Since beach season has arrived, the Marine Safety Division suggests talking to the lifeguard before going in the water. Rip currents happen quickly and are the number one cause of rescues in Huntington Beach. Staying calm is the number one action to take if you encounter a rip current. If you are a skilled swimmer, then swim parallel to shore to escape it. Rip currents have distinguishing characteristics: mushroom-shaped and brown, choppy water. The lifeguard will know exactly where they occur and can give suggestions on where to swim. For daily information on beach and ocean conditions, please visit www.HBSafeBeachDay.com.

National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) & Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Awareness Week

Each year, June 1 through June 7 is National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Awareness Week, which spotlights how lives can be saved if more people learn CPR and how to use an AED. Annually, thousands of people suffer a sudden cardiac arrest in the United States. Nearly 70% of all sudden cardiac arrests occur out-of-hospital. CPR, if performed immediately, can potentially save a life. CPR can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.

If you are interested in CPR & AED classes this summer, please visit HBSANDS.org for scheduled classes.
