Update on Former Rodgers Seniors’ Center Project

Construction of the park space at the former Rodgers Seniors’ Center site continues to make progress.

Since the former City facility closed, the Public Works Department and the Community & Library Services Department have been making great strides in transforming the former senior center site into Surf City’s newest passive park and community rental facility. While there is still a lot of work to be done before we are able to welcome our newest park in early 2023, a few project updates include:

  • The former Rodgers Seniors’ Center facility was retired and demolished
  • Meandering pathways are complete
  • Parking lot is complete
  • Sod is expected to be laid soon and has a minimum 90-day establishment period
  • Interior improvements to the formers Senior Outreach Building are still underway
  • City Council approved the official name of the park to be 17TH Street Park at the June 21, 2022 Council Meeting.

Naming of the former Senior Outreach Building is tentatively scheduled for discussion at the Community & Library Services Commission meeting on Wednesday, August 10. Upon Commission approval of a name for the facility, the item will then be presented to City Council for consideration.
