HBFD Explorers Accepting Interest Cards for Spring 2022

The Huntington Beach Fire Department Fire Explorer Program is a youth-based program that focuses on introducing young men and women ages 14-20 to the duties of fire and emergency medical services.

The program will train young adults to better understand the diverse roles within the Fire Department with an emphasis on education, teamwork, career development, and positive mentoring. Participants will be given hands on experience in the fire service in order to help them determine whether they would like to pursue this career professionally. Although this program is not considered a direct recruitment opportunity, it does provide an unparalleled insight into the operations of the Huntington Beach Fire Department.

Once participants are enrolled in the Fire Explorer Program, they will attend mandatory training meetings where they participate in both classroom-based training and hands-on manipulative training. Fire Explorers are encouraged to participate in the Ride-Along Program where they are given the opportunity to observe on-duty crews and respond to emergency calls.

Program requirements include:

  • Young men and women ages 14-21 and have completed the 8th grade
  • Maintain a 2.0 GPA or above
  • Adhere to HBFD grooming standards
  • Complete a screening process and background check
  • Must successfully pass a 3-month probationary period and oral interview

Interest cards are accepted year round and can be completed on the HB Fire Explorers Website. Any interest cards submitted after October 22, 2021, will be processed for an upcoming Explorers session in late Spring 2022.
