Do you have leftover household products such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides that contain potentially hazardous ingredients and need to be properly disposed? Items that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients are considered to be “household hazardous waste” or “HHW.” Improper disposal of HHW includes pouring them down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers, or in some cases, putting them with the trash. The dangers of such disposal methods might not be immediately obvious, but improper disposal of these wastes can pollute the environment and pose a threat to human health.
Huntington Beach residents have access to a FREE year-round collection center that safely disposes of your HHW items. Republic Services, located at 17121 Nichols Street-Gate 6 in Huntington Beach, welcomes you to bring HHW products to their location.
Please observe the following regulations in preparing for your visit to the HHW Center:
• The Center can only accept waste from Orange County residents. Waste will not be accepted from businesses, churches, schools, nonprofit organizations, or government agencies.
• A maximum of 15 gallons/125 pounds may be transported per vehicle, per trip (Department of Transportation Requirement). It is illegal to exceed these limits.
• Containers larger than five gallons will not be accepted.
• Containers will NOT be returned, except for oil containers, upon request.
• Materials must be in original containers (except motor oil, fuels and antifreeze).
• All containers must have lids, be sturdy, not leaking, labeled, and protected from breakage.
• Do not combine different types of waste.
HHW drop-off hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, except on major holidays and rainy days. To confirm if the collection center is open during rain events call 714-834-4000. For recorded information call 714-834-6752.
