The Huntington Beach Public Library’s Summer Reading Program brought more than 19,000 community members together for the library’s largest annual celebration of reading, which took place from June 24 through August 13.

During the program, more than 3,600 readers accepted a seven-week reading challenge, tracking the time they spent reading or the number of books they read. Youth readers tallied up a combined 872,916 minutes of reading, and adult readers reported 2,390 books read. Over 16,000 residents enjoyed library events and programs, with more than 200 events offered across the library’s five branch locations. Programs and events included tiny art nights, ice cream tastings, storytimes, book clubs of all shapes and sizes, and even an afternoon tea workshop.

The library saw a 46% increase in reading challenge participation compared to 2022, with the largest growth in adult participation which increased over 120%. Program and event attendance increased by over 130% across all age categories.

The library partnered with local business owners and nonprofit organizations to make this program possible. Special sponsorship shout-outs go to local boba hot spot 7 Leaves Cafe, who offered a free beverage to every reading challenge participant and local Wingstop locations, who donated free wing coupons for youth participants. Special thanks are also due to our library support groups, the Friends of the Library and Friends of the Children’s Library, who contribute both resources and volunteer time to make this program happen each year.
