The City Council voted unanimously to analyze whether street safety could be enhanced by reducing vehicle speed limits in areas of high danger of traffic accidents particularly as they relate to pedestrians and cyclists. This local control of city street speeds was made possible by California Assembly Bill 43 (AB 43) which passed in October 2021. AB 43 allows cities, in certain instances, to lower speed limits where it is deemed necessary to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
During its public discussion, the City Council asked City staff to prioritize the analysis of the streets near schools, parks and business districts on top of areas with historically fatal and severe injury collisions.
As the City awaits for AB 43 to go into effect on January 1, 2022, its traffic enforcement team will identify locations where its speed limits pose the greatest danger of fatal or severe injuries.
