As part of the City’s response to the pandemic last year, the city authorized the temporary closure of the second block of Main Street to vehicular traffic and allowed businesses to expand into the street for outdoor dining and retail opportunities.
On September 7th, the City Council voted to extend this closure until December 31st, 2021. The city has now entered into a phased plan to consider keeping the street closed permanently in order to create an outdoor community “family friendly space” where residents can find a unique dining, art, and shopping experience.
Some of the proposed features of this new experiential retail may include:
- A new cohesive tree palette to unify the streetscape
- A mural crosswalk scramble
- A branded signage/wayfinding program
- Wider sidewalks and bike paths along the PCH complete with landscape buffers and protection
This Al Fresco plaza design proposal would unify the pedestrian friendly outdoor dining and shopping experience for city residents as well as make the space more inviting for tourists.
This first step will allow the city to move forward with gathering public input and refining the design for the City Council’s consideration at a future date.
