The Huntington Beach Police Department is happy to announce a new partnership for the ongoing care of our Mounted Enforcement Unit (MEU) horses with Rick Baer Training Stables. Following a competitive public bid process, and a rigorous vetting process, this collaboration officially commenced on December 1, 2023.
Rick Baer and his team bring a wealth of expertise and dedication to provide specialized services to the City of Huntington Beach, ensuring our four-legged officers’ receive optimal care and are being well-cared for. Our horses will receive comprehensive services including:
- Ongoing monitoring of overall horse health.
- Coordination of veterinary and farrier appointments.
- Ensuring up-to-date horse vaccinations.
- Regular exercise five times per week.
- Individualized training sessions with the trainer each week.
- Nutritional supplements provided five days per week.
- Collaboration with MEU supervisors and assisting riders in correcting horse behavior.
- Providing horse first aid services.
- Assisting with necessary rehab for horse injuries.
- Responsibility for ordering horse supplements and bedding.
Since transitioning under Rick Baer’s guidance, positive transformations have taken root. Recognizing the horses’ needs, he implemented a new diet rich in nutrients, promoting healthy weight gain and maintenance. The company has also provided recommendations and guidance in selecting new tack to ensure the horses are comfortable and ready for their daily duties. Already, MEU riders have reported a notable improvement in the behavior and temperament of our horses during their patrols.
