Hispanic Heritage Month – Sept. 15 – Oct. 15

Hispanic Heritage month is observed every year from September 15th to October 15th in which the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America are celebrated. During this time the City of Huntington Beach extends its invitation in honoring and celebrating the prosperity, power, and progress of our Hispanic and Latinx community.

In 1968, California Congressman George E. Brown introduced the recognition of Hispanic Heritage as a week-long celebration, and it was not until 1989 that President George H. W. Bush officially declared it would be expanded to a month-long celebration. By providing more time, it allows for the proper recognition as that the timing coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of several Latin American nations which include, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  As the years have passed, the recognition and overall appreciation has grown as the Hispanic and Latinx communities have continued to graciously contribute to the economic, political, and social growth of the United States.

Looking for ways to take part in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month? Here are a few suggestions on how to expand your knowledge and appreciation:

  • Try traditional recipes from Hispanic and Latinx chefs.
  • Visit the Huntington Beach Public Library to explore the choices of books that celebrate Hispanic and Latinx culture.
  • Support a Hispanic or Latinx owned business or entrepreneur.

The City of Huntington is proud to celebrate the prosperity, power, and progress of the Hispanic and Latinx communities not only this month, but year-round!
