Library Freebies – Web & Computer Access

This week we are going to learn about the different ways you can take advantage of your library’s free computer services! One of the more popular and most used freebies offered at the library is FREE internet and computer access.  In addition to the computer labs available at the Central and four branch libraries, you can check out a hotspot device to take home, or use the Wi-Fi on your own laptop or phone while visiting the library.

The Computer Lab:

  • You need your own HBPL card to access the computers
  • No reservations allowed
  • Access the Internet, plus Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, and Publisher software
  • Open during all operating library hours, shut down 15 minutes before closing
  • Self-service, with computer coaches available on select days at Central Library
  • One hour access per day (with the possibility of up to 2 hours extension)
  • Guest computers available for those without a library card
  • Teen Center available at Central Library for young adults ages 13-18
  • Adult content will be blocked
  • CD-ROM and disc drive available at Central Library

Hotspots:

  • Only one hotspot per ADULT card
  • Reserve hotspots in the HBPL Catalog
  • Can be used for 3 weeks and placed on hold (using your library card)
  • Can connect up to 10 devices with unlimited monthly data
  • Renewals are allowed when there are no people waiting on hold
  • Must have phone service to use hotspots
  • Hotspots can only be used in the USA
  • You will be charged for lost or damaged hotspots and accessories.
  • Return your Hotspot to the circulation desk at the location on your device’s tag.

Visit the Library website for more information.

Wi-Fi:

To use the Library’s Wi-Fi network, all you need is a “wireless capable device”, such as a smart phone, laptop, or tablet.  A library card and password are not required. The two SSID (Service Set Identifiers) available for use in the library are kids (for use in the children’s library) or hblibrary.  (The branch networks are MainSt_Lib, Banning_Lib, Murphy_Lib, and Oakview_Lib.)

Some things to be aware of:

  • Some sites are filtered to comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act.
  • The library does not provide technical assistance with connectivity
  • The wireless network is only available during normal library operating hours
  • Remote printing is available using a laptop or smart phone

Please visit the City’s website for more detailed information and instructions on how to print from home.
