Storytime: Police Books & Badges

On Tuesday, September 19, the HBPD School Resource Officer enjoyed connecting with all of the wonderful children at the “Storytime: Police Books & Badges” event. The room was packed with curious little ones who were eager to explore the world of books and policing. After the stories, the children had an opportunity to see a real police car up close.

The HBPD thanks the Community and Library Services Department for coordinating this event and is looking forward to sharing more exciting stories during “Storytime.”

Annual Coastal Cleanup Event Recap

On Saturday, September 23, the Public Works Department hosted Coastal and Inner-Coastal Clean Up events at two locations. Over 200 volunteers participated at Bartlett Park and City Beach – collecting more than 700 pounds of trash! The Department would like to thank the various community volunteer organizations, students, seniors, families, and friends for joining City staff in this amazing statewide effort to keep our coastline debris-free!

Huntington Beach Fire Collaborates with Huntington Beach Hospital

On September 21, 2023, the Fire Department collaborated with Huntington Beach Hospital emergency department physicians regarding high-performance CPR in order to enhance the transition of care when cardiac arrest patients are brought to the emergency room. The goal of the consultation was to improve teamwork and enhance the care received by patients in order to maximize their opportunity for survival. The picture to the right shows Dr. Kelly Unger and Fire Division Chief Jeff Lopez discussing the possibility of Fire Department medical equipment remaining attached to patients during resuscitation in the emergency room to minimize interruptions to CPR. Collaboration with community partners is a critical element of the Department’s HEARTSafe HB Initiative. The goal of this program is to increase survival from sudden cardiac arrest.

Ascon Project Update

The City and Ascon continue to work together to ensure that remediation efforts at the landfill site are held to exceptional standards and that the surrounding community is kept up to date. With any landfill cleanup, there will be intermittent odors and adjustments will be made accordingly. As the pilot testing wraps up soon, the team will prepare the site for potential rain this autumn and winter. During these months, work will stop, as the Ascon team will take the data from the pilot testing and prepare a report that will be reviewed by the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). This report will be available to the community and will include a restart plan and timeline for finishing cleanup efforts at the landfill site. If all goes according to plan, cleanup efforts could start in mid- to late spring 2024 and take approximately 18 months to complete. Prior to work starting, there will be a community meeting planned for early 2024 to ensure that nearby residents, schools, and businesses are informed about the final plan and timeline.

Huntington Beach Police Department Bicycle & E-Bicycle Enforcement

Since the beginning of the school year, the HBPD has been actively engaged in Bicycle Enforcement operations and have aligned their efforts with the school bell schedule.

The officers are proactively identifying and addressing various bicycle violations, including but not limited to failure to wear a helmet, riding on the wrong side of the road, disregarding red lights and stop signs, and other violations of the rules of the road.

The top three most commonly observed violations include the following:

  • Not wearing a helmet for those under 18 years old
  • Riding a restricted pocket bike on the roadway
  • Riding against the flow of traffic

In their continuous commitment to enhance e-bike safety awareness in the community, the HBPD will persist in enforcing bicycle regulations throughout the school year. Additionally, the HBPD will continue their collaboration with local middle and high schools to provide safety education, conduct bi-monthly community e-bike/bicycle safety classes, organize community bicycle safety rodeos, and share bicycle safety education content through our social media channels.
