HB Marine Safety Transitions to Fall Season

The fall season has arrived in Huntington Beach and the temperatures at the beach have remained the same at 75 to 80 degrees with ocean temperatures of 65 to 68 degrees. The surf has been consistent with wave heights of two to four feet. Unfortunately, this combination caused a number of rip currents. With the nice weather came an increase in beach visitors and accompanying calls for service. Lifeguards have been keeping busy responding to 300 calls for service in the last week alone, which ranged from ocean rescues to medical aids.

The warm water temperatures can lure non-swimmers into the water. As a reminder, it is important to supervise small children and non-swimmers in any type of water. It is also important that the water watcher be focused on those in the water and not distracted. Anytime you are at the beach or the harbour, check in with the lifeguard. They know the current conditions, which can change from hour to hour, and will recommend the safest places to swim. Additionally, make use of the City’s Safe Beach Day app which provides real-time information on City Beach conditions and hazards.
